Hello. My name is Stephen Hickman, and I am a studio cabinetmaker.

A small-scale, high-end craftsman.

I trained at Rowden Atelier, known as one of the finest furniture school in the world, under the late artist and master craftsman David Savage.

I take inspiration from the studio potters and studio furniture makers of the 20th century.

I specialise in producing individual pieces of fine furniture.

Throughout my work I tell my own story:

• A story that celebrates heirloom craftsmanship.

• A story that celebrates the beauty of local timber.

Genuine Local Provenance
I work at the Sylva Wood Centre in Long Wittenham, where I am able to work with beautiful local hardwoods, grown in the surrounding countryside.

Many timbers are from local forests and arboretums.

Unique furniture with genuine provenance,

Grown and made right here in Oxfordshire.

Unique…so not for everyone
Of course, my furniture is not for most people.

Production is too expensive, too slow and too inefficient for it to ever be a mass-market offering.

But if you are interested in craftsmanship,

You are not most people.

You are unique, and you want a unique piece.

Something that no-one else will have.

Of course, it is very challenging to really understand a piece of furniture from pictures on a website. So you are welcome to come and take a look at it in my workshop. You can then buy the piece and see it in your home completely risk free - if you don’t love it, just return it within 30 days for a full refund.

Please be aware that I am an independent artist and the each piece I make is unique - it can never be exactly recreated. Also, I can only work with a limited number of bespoke clients and when the order book is full you may have to wait some time. To avoid disappointment…get in touch!

To be fully transparent, there are times when I cannot source British timber. In these cases, I’ll use FSC sustainabe hardwoods from Europe and North America, or wood that has been reclaimed and recycled. Either way, sustainability remains at the core of my business.
