Born in Essex (1982) and currently living and working in Oxfordshire, Stephen Hickman is a meticulous craftsman whose furniture designs embody a dialogue between traditional and contemporary forms. Following a career in teaching he trained under David Savage at Rowden Atelier (2015-2018). His creative approach is inspired by the American studio furniture movement, along with contemporary British furniture designer-makers such as John Makepeace and Marc Fish. Hickman seamlessly integrates modernist design principles with the fluidity of freeform sculptural elements, unfolding narratives celebrating the beauty of native hardwoods. Drawing from Oxford's landscape and a fascination with forests and rivers, his pieces transcend functional furniture, forging a timeless connection between the crafted object and the land's spirit, offering an artful blend of cabinetmaking skill, local provenance and nature’s heritage. He has exhibited at Cheltenham Celebration of Craftsmanship and Design and was featured in the book "The Intelligent Hand" (2019, Lost Art Press).
